With the notoriety that her work has gotten, we reached out to Monika to talk about her line and where the inspiration began.

Checkout our recent conversation where we talk about her favorite shoes from her line and what you can expect to see in her newest upcoming collection:

Your shoes are sexy, edgy and empowering. What inspires your line and what do you love most about it?

I am a woman designing for women.

I love that I can think about what I would like to wear and fortunately, other women then like it too:)

I am inspired by women who like to take risks and who are not afraid of what others think of them.

To me that is a very empowering quality.

My styles are bold, feminine, sexy yet functional.

What sets your line apart from any other line out there today?

Quality is very important to me.

I know my shoes are not for every woman out there and I do not aim to make them that way.

My core customers take great fun in dressing. My shoes evoke emotions and usually are standout item-y pieces.

When crafting these beautiful pieces, what are the most important factors that considered?

Style and quality.

When did you know you know you wanted to design shoes and start your own line?

I fell into designing my own line – and designing as a profession for that matter – sort of by accident.

It was never a dream of mine and I never had imagined this.

I was given the opportunity, at the time I felt like I had nothing to lose so I just went for it.

Of course I had always been obsessed with fashion and as a little girl. I had started creating and making my own clothes and accessories, for my dolls first and then for myself and friends later.

What piece of advice would you give to anyone wanting to start their own business, specifically in the fashion world?

It is important you believe in yourself and that you have at least one supportive and encouraging person near you as it is not always as glamorous as some people may think.

It takes a lot of work and dedication.

It is also important to know your audience and customer.

Your styles do not have to appeal to everyone.

As long as you have a small group of loyal customers and they keep coming back for more, you’re on the right track.

How do you find inspiration for a new collection?

Since an early age, I have had the good fortune to have lived in so many different countries and I have seen many different cultures.

I think my collections are always more or less informed by my experiences.

I am based in New York City and I’m inspired by every aspect of this city, whether it’s the people, the architecture and the energy.

I also love to travel and I’m constantly looking for inspiration.

There’s beauty in the top part of a fence, a piece of jewelry, the lines of a boat, something I see in a movie, art… sharp and shiny and dangerous-looking items…I can go on and on.

How are colors and textiles chosen when forming a collection?

I love the interplay of different textures and styles.

I love combining soft and feminine with sharp and shiny; glossy leather with buttery soft suede.

I love combining the unexpected.

What’s your favorite Monika Chiang shoe to date and why?

The Imena and Imena II. This shoe perfectly “says” what I am all about. It’s sexy, feminine, glamorous, a bit bohemian and very importantly it has a touch of rebellion and I don’t give a damn.

Who would you like to collaborate with for a collection? Monika Chiang meets ____.

Its too hard to name just one.

The list could be endless 😉

Is there anything exciting we can expect in the future for Monika Chiang?

I’m hoping to open a pop-up shop in the near future.

People are constantly asking us where they can try on my shoes as we are online only at the moment.

I’m very excited about my Fall 17 collection launching. There will be crystals, glitter, animal prints….

I don’t want to give too much away….
