I grew up playing sports so upon entering college I never believed there would a point where I wouldn’t be fit.
I began running track when I was eight and it quickly became my sport. In high school, I ran JV track my freshman year and Varsity my sophomore year.
Unexpectedly, I was sent to boarding school and I quickly learned that they didn’t have sports teams. I had such a passion for track and I was devastated that my career was over.
For the next two years, I gained weight. With no source of exercise and a poor diet (if you have ever attended boarding school, I’m pretty sure you are well aware of just how limited food options are) I became lethargic, unmotivated and gained an unhealthy amount of weight. And it honestly didn’t help that the kitchen opted for using margarine to cook every single meal. I gained the weight pretty quickly and it took some time after my graduation to really get back into fitness and running.
Entering my freshman year of college, my sister and I decided to hop on the fitness train and create a blog. We followed a fitness guide religiously, uploading posts and videos to share our progress with our followers. We wanted to spread the idea that college students could maintain a healthy lifestyle while juggling the everyday struggles of college. We promoted the idea of fit over skinny. And it worked.
Losing weight is not the same for everyone. It’s requires dedication to a healthy diet and fitness regime.
The hardest part?
Getting started. I found a fitness program online and my sister and I held each other accountable. Over time, it became religious. Now, it’s like brushing my teeth every morning.
Here’s how I lost the weight, the healthy way:
Begin with cardio.
Many people make the mistake of attempting to build muscle before they’ve shed the weight.
Getting even just twenty minutes on the bike everyday can make the world of a difference.
Every morning, set an alarm and get yourself in the gym or outside running. Sign up for a cycling class or grab a buddy to go running with you. It’s helpful to have someone there and working towards a goal together.
Change your diet.
Eliminate the salt heavy ingredients that leave you feeling lethargic for the rest of the day.
Removing something like the every day can of soda you indulge on can make a huge difference.
At first it may seem impossible.
Let me tell you, the cravings are real. The urge to pop open that bag of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos will seem overwhelming. But overtime, healthier substitutes will diminish that craving. Take turkey bacon for example.
Plan out your meals and cook at home.
Planning out meals and cooking at home will not only make you a MASTER chef, but you will be able to keep track of the kind of food you are consuming.
Eliminating high quantities of salt and sugar is very important. They’re hiding everywhere too…even in those acai bowls that make you feel like you’ve just become the purest form of a human being. Can you feel the toxins escaping your body? Right now? Nope. Those bowls are notorious for harboring excessive amounts of sugar.
As for carbs? They’re not as evil as you may think.
It’s important to realize that when it comes to food, simplistic statements about “good” or “bad” food disregard the bigger picture. Take fruit for example. Fruit is good for you. In excess? Not so much.
Restricting your diet is unsafe and you won’t see the results you hoped for.
It’s important that before and after each workout you are consuming some sort of protein within forty-five minutes to an hour. Your body needs to burn fat, not muscle. I often opt for a protein bar, small bowl of oatmeal or a banana before any workout.
After, I will have a meal high in protein like a shake, eggs, chicken or salmon.
So, we’ve altered our diets and maintained a strict cardio regime.
It’s time to start getting fit and building muscle!
The KEY here is also consistency, CONSISTENCY, CONSISTENCY.
Make a schedule for yourself. Start out with a fitness program and follow it. I started out with Kayla Itsines BBG guide and eventually began my own workouts.
Following a guide not only holds you accountable, but it pushes you further.
Not only do you reap the benefits of working out but you become immersed in a community of people supporting each other through their fitness journeys. It is one of the best feelings too.
Side note: SUCH A PLUS when you’re more swole than your boyfriend. HA!
Every morning I wake up more energized and proud of where I’ve gotten myself. I don’t think there’s anything more rewarding than knowing you’re able to take such great care of not only your body but, your mind.
