Justine Marjan is best known for creating her iconic looks on major celebrities like Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney Kardashian, as well as Olivia Culpo, Chrissy Teigen, Lily Aldridge, Jenna Dewan Tatum, and Kerry Washington.
And if that wasn’t enough, some of her work has been on the covers of:
- GQ Germany
- Billboard Magazine
- Lapalme Magazine
- Parents Magazine
Marjan has become a force and really defines drive and motivation.
So, it’s really no surprise that she’s joined the Kardashian squad.
And if you’re asking yourself “how?”
Check out our latest interview with Justine Marjan to find out:
I read in an interview with InStyle that you responded to an Instagram ad that Jen Atkin had posted a couple of years ago. And through your persistence and thoroughness, she ended up hiring you. What piece of advice would you give to hairstylist professionals, looking to land their dream job?
Be persistent, professional, and believe in yourself.
Be willing to take a couple of steps back to take a step forward.
Have a willingness to learn, and try to absorb all the information you can from the people around you.
Surround yourself with people who inspire you, or are better than you, and never think you are too good for something.
What is the biggest lesson or takeaway that you’ve learned while working for/with Jen?
There’s enough work for everyone to be successful!
Be inspired by your peers, and don’t feel like you have to compete with everyone.
What’s a typical day like for you?
What I love about my career and lifestyle right now is that no two days are ever the same.
When I was a salon stylist, being at the same place doing the same thing all day drove me crazy.
I love that every job I do is at a different location and that I have the opportunity to travel and be creative.
My days may start at 3 am or 3 pm and I usually work 7 days a week, but every day is different.
On an ideal day, I love waking up early to workout at Equinox, then having breakfast with my fiancé at home. Then I’ll get ready (I LOVE when I have enough time to do a face beat tutorial on Instastory), and head to work (usually a celeb clients’ house or on set for a photoshoot).
I usually have a couple of jobs in a day so I’ll run around town from house to house, or if I’m on set for a shoot it’s typically a long 12-14 hour day.
When I’m finished, I come home and work on my computer for a couple of hours. Sometimes after work, I spend my evenings prepping hair extensions for the next day or researching for upcoming jobs.
So much of what I do is about staying inspired and keeping up with fashion.
What do you love most about your job? And what do you love the least?
There’s so much that I love!
I love that I get to travel the world, be creative, go to amazing locations, spend my time in beautiful homes around beautiful people!
I love that I get to work with so many inspiring, talented, and amazing women who work hard and have made something for themselves.
I love making someone feel good and manifesting a vision to life.
I love creating an entire look from start to finish, cohesive with wardrobe and makeup. I love seeing how my work translates on film and TV.
What I love least are long hours.
Yes, a lot of what we do is fun and glamorous, but it is a hard lifestyle for most people. I’ve worked 12-14 hours each day for the past 4 days and my body is tired. When you work such long days, there’s no time to work out or think about your health.
What are your goals professionally within the next 5 years?
I would love to keep working with amazing brands and do partnerships! I love making videos. I’d love to do more red carpet and editorial work and meet and work with more amazing women.
And since hair is your specialty, we had to ask a few questions while we had the opportunity.
What hair products would you suggest to the client when trying to recreate the pin straight hair look you recently did on Kim Kardashian?
- Tresemme Keratin Smooth Serum
- GHD air hairdryer
- GHD platinum flat iron
- Leonor Greyl Eclat Natural
- Tresemme Keratin Smooth Hairspray
How do you achieve Shay Mitchell’s gorgeous waves?
For voluminous looks, how you prep the hair is key.
When the hair was dry, I curled with a GHD 1 1/4 inch curling iron, alternating directions.
And for someone who doesn’t have too much time in the morning to do their hair, how can they still achieve a put together look?
Wash your hair the night before so you don’t have to worry about blow-drying, then sleep on a silk pillowcase to combat frizz.
In the morning, I either just run my GHD ruby sunset gold iron (similar one here) through the ends, create a few bends around the face, or put Tresemme Keratin Smooth oil in my hair and slick back into a chic chignon.
What hair looks are you loving at the moment?
I recently cut Olivia Culpo’s hair short into a chic bob and I’m having such hair envy.
What is the one thing that you wish people would stop doing to their hair?
Being too aggressive with color.
Color really takes a toll on the hair and can cause lots of breakage and damage if done incorrectly. If you’re going lighter, do it sparingly and take your time to get to your desired shade.
Also, think about placement. Do you really need to be adding highlights ALL OVER, or can they just be around your face and parting?
And last but definitely not least, what hair products do you live by?
- Tresemme Repair and Protect 7 Leave in Spray
- Bumble and Bumble Full Form Mousse
- Oribe Thickening Spray
- OUAI Treatment Masque
- Tresemme Keratin Smooth Serum,
- GHD platinum flat iron
- Rat tail comb
- Sheila Stotts brush
