Jose Martinez of Glit Glam is known for his non-conventional makeup techniques, high profile clientele list and most of all, his artistic vision.
I reached out to Jose to not only find out about his impressive beauty techniques, but to talk inspiration, what it took to get him to where he is today and what it’s like to work with some of the notable gurus in the beauty industry.
Check out our conversation below:
So, your makeup techniques are LIFE. How do you pick up new methods and tricks to keep yourself current?
Aside from the occasional makeup seminars/demos, I LOVE being creative and innovative by coming up with very different techniques. Sometimes my techniques come from very unlikely places.
For example, I could be watching my friends (who have nothing to do with makeup), trying to apply makeup.
I love the awkward way they hold the brush, so I’ll try it and somehow it works for a certain makeup application. A little weird I know, but I honestly like to think that inspiration can come from the most unlikely places and I love it.
What are your favorite looks at the moment to create?
Lately I’ve been into creating non-conventional looks as content for my Instagram.
These looks are not something you go to the grocery store with or even a night out really, I create them more as inspiration for myself as well as those who follow me.
I tend to think sometimes as beauty influencers, we get caught up in product reviews and our discount codes (which isn’t bad at all either), but we tend to forget what’s really important: the ART in makeup.
What is the one beauty look you wish people would STOP doing?
I don’t have one actually.
I wish people would stop wishing other people would stop doing what they like to do. 🙂
To me, if you like it wear it from makeup to clothes, JUST DO IT!
What are some beauty products that you swear by?
God so many of them!!! Lol
But if I have to condense to I don’t know… let’s say three, they would be:
I can’t live without contour, I can’t blend out contour without my beauty blender and lashes well lashes are just LIFE!
When did you know you wanted to be a makeup artist?
From a very young age, I showed interest in everything beauty, hair, makeup and fashion.
But it wasn’t till later in life when I decided makeup was my thing.
Just the way you could express yourself in so many ways and do it all over again and again, after every makeup removing wipe swipe…. <3
What do you love most about your job and what do you love the least?
What I like the most about my job is being surrounded by so many talented people that keep inspiring one another. It’s like never a ending snowball of creativeness.
Finding what I like the least is hard. But I guess for some projects and very rarely does this happen, but we end up having very little creative input and I guess that’s what I like the least.
What’s a typical day like for you?
Check my snap it’s all on there! lol
No but really, I wake up, read emails, Glam, work work work and werk some more. 🙂
Nighttime is the best and worst because, it’s the time I get my best inspirations, but it’s also the time I should be asleep to do it all over again the next day.
When you landed your first celebrity client, how did you react?
When I landed my first celebrity client she wasn’t a celebrity at the the time, so I didn’t have much of a reaction.
I guess as her celebrity status increased it was exciting for the both of us so we kinda grew together in that aspect if that makes sense 🙂
Btw, love you boo @natalieevamarie.
What piece of advice would you give to someone trying to make it in the business?
Stay true to who you are and remember to keep your feet on the ground and your dreams sky high ??
What was the toughest obstacle you had to overcome when it came to advancing in your career?
The toughest obstacle would probably be myself.
Just believing who your are, what you’ve made of yourself and the things you do.
Sometimes I tend to forget, and I have to get my life together and remind myself:
“Hey! I’m actually pretty cool” ? lol
We all have to know that it’s ok from time to time to stop and look in the mirror to remind yourself: “Hey! I’m pretty bad ass!”
Who is your dream client and why?
My dream client is actually an existing client. Her name is Lilly Ghalichi Mir.
From very early on in my career I knew I needed to glam this living Persian Barbie! She is just the DEFINITION of glam, if there ever was one. I mean she’s legit the GLAM QUEEN as far as I know!
Is there someone you look to as a role model? Is there anyone that’s taken the steps on a professional level, that you would like to mimic?
I don’t think there is a particular person steps I’d mimic.
I’ve definitely been inspired by many artists, but I feel like there’s no such thing as to mimic someone’s steps.
Only thing we can do is be inspired and make our own path.
How has social media effected your career? As it played a major role?
Social media has affected my career in the most amazing way. It definitely plays a huge role in my career by giving me a platform to showcase my art.
What do you hope to accomplish in the next five years on a professional level?
In the next five years I see myself with a successful full cosmetic line, a salon and still reaching for the top….
I always think:
“I don’t wanna make it to the top because whats next after that?”
I don’t know but it just sounds boring.
The pursuit of our constantly evolving hopes, goals and dreams sounds a lot more fun than “being on the top.”
