So, Why “Can’t” You Wear White After Labor Day?

Have you ever questioned why you can’t wear white have labor day?

I know I have.

Want to know why?

Be prepared, the reasoning is extra lame and extra petty.

In the late 19th century, the society ladies were engaged in an invisible battle with the nouveau riche.

And the only way this battle could be won was by subtle manipulation of fashion.

These ladies probably telegrammed one another saying:

“Bertha. Girl. Why don’t we just set an arbitrary date where we all stop wearing white for the summer? You know, to separate ourselves from those newly rich heathens.”

So the ladies agreed on it.

And when Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, it was then that you knew to silently put away your white apparel.

Yep. End of story.

So, if you’re like me, you’ll be wearing white the day after labor day.
