Just in time for Halloween, PrettyLittleThing is selling Black Face paint for all your face decor needs.
I came across this find interesting find when looking for my own Halloween costume. But I have to ask… couldn’t you guys have come up with a better name? Or maybe not agree to sell a product with such horrible labeling?
The product in question is by Snazaroo – a brand that specializes in face paint.
Selling the product isn’t in question at the moment as many people do purchase black paint to create designs (hopefully to paint their entire face black).
At this time, it’s simply the naming of the product. The naming seems to be in very poor taste, especially with how sensitive these topics can be.
“Create different designs and enjoy hours of imaginative play with this classic black face paint.” – PLT
For those who live under a rock, blackface is a form of theatrical makeup was used predominantly by non-black performers to represent a caricature of a black person. This practice gained popularity back the 1820s with the first minstrel shows but lost its popularity in the United States during the Civil Rights Movement.
By all means, purchase the product if you must, but be tasteful about it when it comes to application time. Or maybe just opt for a product with better branding and marketing.
This falls close to the recent controversy with Revolve, when a sweatshirt in collaboration with LPA that seemed to promote fat-shaming, came under fire. While the garment was quickly pulled, many wondered why Revolve even sold it in the first place.
