Funeral Attire Dos & Don’ts

Funeral Attire Dos & Don’ts

According to a recent survey, almost 50% of men admit that they have a hard time figuring out what to wear to a funeral. It’s an issue that many women face, too, especially now that men and women are no longer required to wear all-black suits and dresses to funerals.

Are you struggling to find something to wear to a funeral at the moment? There are some dos and don’ts that you should keep in mind when searching for a funeral outfit.

Here is a guide that will help you pick out the right outfit the next time you attend a funeral.

Do: Choose a Darker-Colored Outfit

As we just alluded to, there was a time when men and women were both expected to wear black from head to toe when attending a funeral. Men wore black suits, women wore black dresses, and that was that.

Know that you no longer have to take this approach to choose a funeral outfit. You’re free to wear black if you want to, but you can also choose from a wide variety of other colors.

For example, you can wear a suit or a dress that is:

  • Gray
  • Navy
  • Brown
  • Forest Green

You should not, however, wear a funeral outfit that’s too bright. That means staying away from colors like red, yellow, orange, pink, and even white (with a white dress shirt being the exception).

Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to steer clear of wearing any colors that will command too much attention. You want all of the attention at a funeral to be on the deceased. Not on the outfit that you decided to wear.

Don’t: Wear an Outfit With a Wild Pattern

In addition to staying away from any outfits that feature bright colors when picking out something to wear to a funeral, you should also leave anything that has a wild pattern on it in your closet. Even if the outfit is black, gray, or navy, the wild design is going to prove to be too distracting.

If you have an outfit with a subtle, unassuming pattern on it, that will be OK. But if you can, wearing something with one solid color is usually your best bet.

Do: Make Sure Your Outfit Covers You Up

Modesty is the key when it comes to finding a great funeral outfit. You don’t want anything that is going to make it look like you’re trying to show off some skin when you’re attending a funeral.

For men, that means picking out a shirt that covers them up to their neck. It also means staying far away from even thinking about wearing shorts to a funeral.

For women, that means selecting a pantsuit or a dress that covers them up to their neck and down to just above the knees. It also means avoiding mini-skirts and any other articles of clothing that might be considered too risqué for a funeral.

Don’t: Pair Your Outfit Up With Sneakers or Flip-Flops

Nothing will ruin a funeral outfit quicker than the wrong pair of shoes. It’s why you need to think long and hard about what kind of shoes you put on your feet before heading out the front door for a funeral.

You can put on the most amazing suit for a funeral. But if you throw on a pair of sneakers with it, it’ll all be for naught. Your sneakers are going to attract the wrong kind of attention from other people, even if they’re on the high-end side.

You can also put on the perfect dress for a funeral. But if you wear a pair of flip-flops with it, they’re going to be the first—and maybe only!—thing people see at a funeral. They’re going to wonder why you didn’t wear nicer shoes with your funeral outfit.

The shoes that you wear to a funeral should complement the rest of your outfit. They should also be black or another dark color to match your look.

Do: Find Small Ways to Accessorize Your Outfit

Just because you’re going to a funeral doesn’t mean you can’t find small ways to top off your funeral outfit with accessories. There are lots of different accessories that you can put on to take your look to the next level.

If, for example, you’re wearing a suit to a funeral, you can wear a nice tie that sets your look apart from the look other people are going for. You can also throw on a nice watch or cufflinks.

Since you’re going to be somewhat restricted in what you can wear when picking out a funeral outfit, accessories will allow you to let loose. You can show off your style through the accessories that you choose to wear.

Don’t: Put on Gaudy Jewelry That Ruins Your Outfit

There is nothing wrong with throwing on a few accessories when you’re getting dressed for a funeral. A simple pair of earrings or a classy necklace can keep you looking stylish without causing too much of a stir at a funeral.

But it would be best if you stayed away from wearing any gaudy jewelry that will distract other people at a funeral. Go with modest jewelry instead that will show that you put some real thought into your outfit and how it would be perceived.
